The Bottom Line
So... Why Another Blog?
People have been telling me for years that I should start a blog.
My answer was usually the same.
"I'm too busy."
Running a dive shop, teaching courses, servicing equipment, running charter boats, commercial diving, fixing things that broke yesterday and trying to stay one step ahead of the next thing that's about to break doesn't leave a whole lot of spare time.
But the older I get, the more I realize there are things worth writing down.
Not because I think I've got all the answers.
Because I've spent more than thirty years in an industry that I genuinely love, and I've learned a few things along the way. Some lessons came easy. Most didn't.
So welcome to The Bottom Line.
This isn't going to be another company blog filled with recycled marketing garbage or clickbait headlines telling you about the "Ten Dive Accessories You Can't Live Without."
There's already enough of that on the internet.
This blog is going to be about the things that interest me.
- Scuba diving
- Commercial diving
- Rebreathers
- Seafood harvesting
- Shellfish aquaculture
- Boat maintenance
- Marine technology
- Compressors
- Regulator servicing
- Dive travel
- Marine life
- Search and recovery
- The business of running a dive shop
...and probably a few things that have absolutely nothing to do with diving.
If I find it interesting, there's a pretty good chance it'll end up here.
Expect Opinions
One thing you're going to notice pretty quickly is that I have opinions.
I don't form them overnight.
I don't form them because somebody famous said something on YouTube.
And I sure as hell don't form them because a marketing department told me what to think.
They're based on experience.
Sometimes that experience agrees with conventional wisdom.
Sometimes it doesn't.
Either way, I'm going to tell you exactly what I think—and more importantly, why I think it.
Gear Reviews... Sean Style
Take equipment reviews, for example.
Most gear reviews are done by someone who borrows a product for a weekend, takes it on three dives and then tells you it's "awesome."
That's not how I roll.
I own a dive charter.
Every season I watch hundreds of divers climb aboard carrying equipment from just about every manufacturer in the industry.
I don't just see how something performs on its first dive.
I see what keeps working after hundreds of dives.
I see what constantly comes back for repairs.
I see what spends more time on the workbench than it does underwater.
And I see the gear that quietly does its job year after year without anyone making a big deal about it.
That's the kind of experience you simply can't get from borrowing a regulator for a weekend.
When I tell you I like a piece of equipment, it'll be because I've watched it earn that opinion.
When I tell you I don't like something, I'll explain exactly why.
No sugar coating.
No manufacturer talking points.
No concern about whether somebody's feelings get hurt.
It Won't Just Be About Gear
We'll also talk about destinations.
Training.
Commercial diving.
Charter operations.
Boats.
Business.
The diving industry.
Sometimes conservation.
Sometimes things that have absolutely nothing to do with diving.
Whatever the subject, you'll know exactly where I stand.
I'm not interested in picking fights.
I'm interested in calling things the way I see them.
If you agree with me, great.
If you don't, that's fine too.
But if you're going to tell me I'm wrong...
Come with receipts.
Bring facts.
Bring experience.
Bring evidence.
Don't tell me what your buddy's cousin heard from a guy at the boat launch fifteen years ago.
I'm always willing to change my opinion when the evidence says I should.
That's called learning.
But I won't change it because somebody on the internet got louder.
My Promise
One thing you'll never have to wonder about is whether you're getting my honest opinion.
You are.
Every single time.
Sometimes you'll agree with me.
Sometimes you won't.
Either way, I hope it gets you thinking.
If it starts a few good conversations along the way...
Even better.
Welcome aboard.
We've got a lot to talk about.
The Bottom Line
This blog isn't here to tell you what you want to hear.
It's here to tell you what I believe after more than thirty years in this industry.
I'll tell you what's good.
I'll tell you what's crap.
Most importantly...
I'll tell you why.
Be Excellent,
