CORAL ISLAND
Rare Coral Gardens Of British Columbia
Coral Island is one of the crown jewels of northern Vancouver Island diving. Hidden within God’s Pocket Marine Park, this remarkable reef system is known for impressive gorgonian corals, steep reef structure, giant plumose anemones, colorful invertebrate life, rockfish, lingcod, and nutrient-rich Pacific water.
This is not a tropical coral reef. It is something far rarer for many divers: a cold-water British Columbia reef where current, depth, structure, and nutrient flow combine to create a dense living wall of colour, texture, and movement.
For underwater photographers, Coral Island can be exceptional. During good visibility windows, the reef offers wide-angle coral scenes, layers of plumose anemones, marine life encounters, dramatic cold-water light, and detailed close-focus opportunities throughout the dive.
Coral Island is a site where timing matters. Tides, swell, visibility, diver experience, and local knowledge all influence the day’s plan. UB Diving selects dive sites based on conditions, safety, diver readiness, and the best opportunity to experience the reef properly.
Coral Island is one of those rare Vancouver Island dive sites where experienced cold-water divers, underwater photographers, and serious marine life enthusiasts can all understand why Port Hardy diving has a world-class reputation.
