NUDI BAY

Hooded Nudibranchs • Macro Photography • Cold-Water Exploration

Nudi Bay is one of Vancouver Island's most unique dive sites. Protected conditions, extraordinary macro life, and seasonal concentrations of hooded nudibranchs have made this Port Hardy dive site a favourite among underwater photographers, videographers, marine naturalists and cold-water explorers.

A Macro Photographer's Dream

Nudi Bay is known for hooded nudibranchs, decorator crabs, shrimp, plumose anemones, tube worms, juvenile rockfish and remarkable Pacific marine biodiversity. While many Vancouver Island dive sites are known for dramatic walls and large marine life, Nudi Bay rewards divers who slow down and look closely.

The site's protected conditions make it ideal for underwater photography, macro videography and long exploratory dives focused on marine life behaviour and fine-detail imaging.

Depths typically reach a maximum of approximately 70 feet, allowing photographers and recreational divers extended opportunities to observe and document marine life.

Fall is widely considered one of the best times of year to experience extraordinary concentrations of hooded nudibranchs throughout the site.

One of the most unusual details reported by divers exploring these seasonal gatherings is the distinct smell of watermelon lingering on divers after exiting the water. It sounds impossible until you experience it yourself.

Marine Life Encounters

Hooded Nudibranchs

Nudi Bay is best known for seasonal concentrations of hooded nudibranchs that attract photographers from across British Columbia and beyond.

Decorator Crabs

Decorator crabs carrying marine growth and camouflage are commonly encountered throughout the site's protected habitat.

Pacific Invertebrates

Tube worms, shrimp, juvenile rockfish, plumose anemones and dense Pacific marine biodiversity create exceptional imaging opportunities.

UB Diving Was Built For This Coast

Many divers exploring Nudi Bay combine their trips with Browning Wall, Coral Island, Five Fathom Rock and other Port Hardy expedition dive sites. Access to these locations is supported through UB Diving's dive charter operations and local knowledge of northern Vancouver Island.

UB Diving is a full-service dive shop in Courtenay, British Columbia providing equipment sales, equipment service, regulator servicing, air fills, Nitrox, CCR support, training, commercial diving services and expedition support throughout Vancouver Island.

Before heading north, many divers stop at UB Diving for equipment preparation, breathing gas, drysuit support, training and trip planning.
