Nanaimo is home to some of the most iconic cold-water wreck diving in British Columbia featuring massive artificial reefs, historic naval vessels, dramatic steel structure, marine biodiversity, and exceptional opportunities for underwater photography and exploration.

The HMCS Saskatchewan and HMCS Cape Breton have become internationally respected cold-water dive sites attracting divers from around the world seeking large-scale wreck environments, penetration opportunities, artificial reef ecosystems, and advanced underwater exploration.

Over the years these wrecks have transformed into thriving marine ecosystems covered in anemones, plumose growth, rockfish, lingcod, perch, nudibranchs, wolf eels, and dense Pacific marine biodiversity throughout the structure.

Descending onto the wrecks often feels less like visiting a sunken ship and more like entering an underwater steel city slowly being reclaimed by the Pacific Ocean.

The scale of the HMCS Cape Breton in particular surprises many divers. Entire sections of the vessel disappear into darker water below while towering steel corridors and massive openings create dramatic wide-angle underwater scenery.
